Akamas Peninsula, named after an Athenian warrior, is one of the greatest areas in Cyprus for its unique and great natural beauty that is untouched by development. It covers about 230 square kilometers on the northwest tip of the island. The National Park reveals breathtaking beauty of nature in terms of geography, geology and precious ecology. The diversity of flora and fauna is impressive - rare plants, flowers, butterflies, foxes, reptiles, migratory birds, seals and turtles find a home in, every sense of the word - the unique peninsula of Akamas.
The unspoiled Akamas beaches are very crucial part of the area since it is one of the few important sea turtle nesting places in Mediterranean. The Loggerhead Turtle and, even rarer, Green Turtle depend on this protected area for its survival in the region. According to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature - these species are endangered. Should you visit the place, do not disturb or destroy any of the species in their natural haven in any way. Be respectful of nature's creations!
Many areas are officially protected. Camping is prohibited in this area, however, there are several walking trails across the peninsula established and safari jeep tours can be booked in advance. It is a perfect place for cycling with its numerous forest paths, especially in autumn months when the temperatures lower. Springtime (March-April) is the best time to explore a huge variety of flowers and other plants.
Please remember!
“If you love a flower, don’t pick it up.
Because if you pick it up it dies and it ceases to be what you love.
So if you love a flower, let it be.
Love is not about possession.
Love is about appreciation.”
